Proper way to install nvidia 390
if you see any error in the process look below;

sudo apt purge --autoremove '*nvidia*'

Package 'nvidia-utils-396' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'nvidia-utils-410' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'nvidia-utils-415' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'nvidia-utils-418' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'nvidia-utils-430' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-396' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-410' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-415' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-418' is not installed, so not removed
Package 'xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-430' is not installed, so not removed
You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.

Solution # for FILE in $(dpkg-divert --list | grep nvidia-340 | awk '{print $3}'); do dpkg-divert --remove $FILE; done
add this into your ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-390
This worked for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
